ELKO, Nevada – Over the past six months, employees at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital (NNRH) raised $27,000 to fight cancer. This was in conjunction with the annual Relay For Life event in June, along with fundraising during the Silver State Stampede in July. Last year, the hospital raised a total of $25,000 to combat cancer, so employees are celebrating breaking their fundraising record by $2,000 this year.
“Supporting local patients who are battling cancer is a cause that is near and dear to our hearts,” said Steve Burrows, director of community relations at the hospital. “Every year, our staff members give very generously and, this year, they really outdid themselves.”
Burrows explained that each hospital department donated raffle prizes to raise funds for the American Cancer Society leading up to the Relay For Life event. The total amount raised during the raffle and other various fundraisers was $13,200. Then the hospital administration matched every dollar with a contribution to the Elko Cancer Network.
“That way, at least half the money stays right here in our community to help our neighbors,” Burrows stated. “It’s important that we support the fight against cancer both nationally and locally.”
The grand total the hospital raised in conjunction with Relay For Life was $26,400. But NNRH didn’t stop there. With the community’s help, the hospital raised another $600 for the Elko Cancer Network by accepting donations in exchange for pink bandanas at the Silver State Stampede.
“We are the major sponsor for Tough Enough To Wear Pink Night each year at the Stampede,” said Burrows. “So, this year we thought, why not buy a bunch of hot pink bandanas and raise some more money for the Elko Cancer Network? Thanks to our generous community, we sold every single bandana before the rodeo even started. And all that money went straight to charity.”
Armida Marin, a board member with the Elko Cancer Network, said the non-profit was very grateful for the hospital’s ongoing support.
“Thank you, NNRH, for supporting the Elko Cancer Network’s mission to improve the health and well-being of cancer-diagnosed Elko County residents through community resources and donations. Your support has made a significant impact on the lives we serve. We could only do it with donors like you. We cherish our continued relationship,” Marin stated.
