Hospital provides over 600 free flu shots

October 14, 2024

ELKO — Hospital staffers and volunteers provided 645 flu shots at an event in the hospital’s parking lot on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The doses were provided over four hours Saturday morning, and by the conclusion about noon, “we had just a few left,” hospital spokesman Steve Burrows stated. He said over 60 people, including staffers, community volunteers, Great Basin College and Elko High School students helped, and “even Ned the NNRH Needle made an appearance.”

“It was inspiring to see so many people giving of their time early on a Saturday morning to make our community healthier," Burrows remarked.

He said hospital nurses provided shots and also guided 35 Great Basin College students majoring in either nursing or medical assisting with the injections — all supervised by a doctor at the drive-up event. For the students, the event counted as one of their clinical rotations, which goes toward the college requirements.

Burrows said in addition to the injections, the event collected 1,014 lbs. of canned foods for the FISH — Friends In Service Helping — food bank.

"We have such a generous community," Burrows said. "It's always awesome to see the way they give back."
