Reno, Nevada – The annual OATBRAN (One Awesome Tour Bike Ride Across Nevada), which is organized by Bike the West, concluded last month. Seven military veterans from around the state participated in conjunction with Project Hero, a national veterans’ rehabilitation group. Of the seven, two participants rode across the entire state from South Lake Tahoe to the Utah border, a total of 424 miles with 17,830 feet of climbing.
Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital served as one of the major sponsors of the event, donating $2,000 to cover participants’ registration fees as well as some of the cost of food and lodging.
Charlie Ekburg of Elko was one of the two participants who completed the entire ride. He summed up the experience by saying, “An extreme challenge, such as this ride provided, builds courage in individuals, allowing them to more easily meet personal challenges that may be affecting their quality of life.”
Ekburg went on to state that it was encouraging to meet other veterans and to accomplish a goal together. “I am forever grateful to people and organizations such as NNRH who understand and support veterans,” he said.
Project Hero is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to helping veterans and first responders affected by post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and other disabilities to achieve rehabilitation, recovery and resilience in their daily lives.
