NNRH Chief of Surgery Appointed to Governor’s Task Force on Prostate Cancer
ELKO, NEVADA – Dr. Don Wasserman, Elko urologist and Chief of Surgery at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital, was appointed to the Governor’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Task Force on August 23 for a four-year term.
During the recent Nevada Legislative Session, Senate Bill 318 was proposed to establish the Nevada Prostate Cancer Task Force. The group is charged with directions to compile research and information concerning this disease and evaluate methods used to create awareness state wide concerning risk, treatment and prevention.
“I became aware of SB 318 in March and realized the importance of such a Task Force for Nevada and submitted a letter to Governor Guinn indicating my full support of the establishment of this Task Force,” said Fred Hodges, NNRH CEO. “I also asked the Governor to consider having one of the seats on the Task Force be filled by a rural representative and I recommended Dr. Wasserman.”
In addition, letters of support were submitted by the Elko Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee, Senator Dean Rhoads, Assemblyman John Carpenter and Assemblyman John Marvel for Dr. Wasserman’s appointment to the Task Force.
“I am proud to receive this appointment by Governor Guinn to serve on the Nevada Prostate Cancer Task Force,” said Dr. Wasserman. “This disease is the second leading cause of death from cancer in men, therefore, we want the men of Nevada to have better information about prevention, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.”

He is an active member of the hospital staff, current Chief of Surgery and current member of the hospital governing board.
“We have been fortunate to have Dr. Wasserman here in this region as a physician and a community leader and we are proud to know his skills and knowledge in the field of prostate cancer will be shared with the rest of the state,” said Hodges.
