January Step - Digital Imaging
Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital chief executive officer, Alex Poirier and director of strategic and community initiatives, Dorothy Gallagher stand listening to Dr. Helmuth Vollger describe the benefits and user-friendly nature of the new digital imaging system at the hospital.
Poirier had Dr. Vollger log into the system and display an image recently taken of his own shoulder. Vollger explained that Poirier’s physician would now be able to access his images from any place there was internet access, with a special password. The system allows the radiologist to mark certain areas of concern and record his voice-remarks about the image. “When your physician wants to see your MRI or CT, she has it no matter where she happens to be . It eliminates the need to mail or transport the films and the radiologist’s personal comments are included there as well. If you want copies of your own images, you now can carry a CD instead of the large packet of films as you’ve done in the past!”
Dr. Vollger and his staff have initiated one-on-one training with hospital personnel to lessen the anxiety while they transition into the new technology. “Physicians can still view the printed image”, Vollger said, “but it is different. Change always takes a little time to get used to. There are cost and time advantages to this system on top of the improvement in digital quality. Patients can better see the images and the images can now be viewed like a movie or as a still image. With this system, we will be able to do a whole new range of exams. ”
