The National Center for Health Statistics released the results of a study on aging and health care costs. Here are some findings:
- A healthy and active 70-year old can expect to live, on average, 14.3 more years. Typically 9 of the remaining years will be with little to no limitation.
- Seniors with no current limitations have $4,600 in annual health care costs; while those with moderate health problems cost $8,500 a year; those with severe disabilities, but not confined to a nursing home cost $14,100 annually; and those in nursing homes average $45,400 a year.
For the average person on Medicare, medical expenses from age 70 to death total $140,700.
