First Baby of 2003
Two local physicians are the parents of the first baby of 2003 born at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital.
Internist Dr. Elizabeth Guenzel gave birth to Robert Winters Van Blarcom at 2:40 p.m. New Year’s Day. Guenzel’s husband is pediatrician Dr. Jeffrey Van Blarcom.
“We’ll call him ‘Win,” Guenzel said today, reporting that the baby, who weighed 6 pounds and 10 ounces, is named after family.
This is the couple’s first baby, and the family of three will be receiving a wide assortment of gifts from merchants honoring the first local baby of the new year.
“We may give some to Jeff’s patients, and he has a lot of patients,” Guenzel said.
“Win” was more than three weeks early, his mother said. She plans to take six weeks off from her practice and then return to work on a more limited basis. She was already limiting her practice just prior to the birth.
“A lot of other internists are pitching in and helping,” Guenzel said, adding they also are helping with patients because Dr. David Hogle is recuperating from an accident.
Guenzel and Van Blarcom have been in practice in Elko for a little more than three years and both have their offices in the medical office building adjacent to the hospital. Van Blarcom is in practice with Dr. Kevin Dinwiddie.
Guenzel said certified midwife Marian Groff delivered the baby.
