New chief executive officer looks forward to “connecting to community.”
If you didn’t get a chance to meet David Henson, our new CEO, at the company Christmas party it probably won’t be long until you do. David told Free Press reporter, Adella Harding, “My first step on the job is meeting department heads and employees at the Elko hospital, meeting local physicians, and getting out into the community.”
David will focus on recruiting nurses, physicians who specialize in fields such as Otolaryngology and Urology, and healthcare specialists in certain technological fields. Henson added, “We want to make healthcare services accessible. It’s good business and good for the community.” Henson says he is impressed with our hospital, both because of its newness and because of its staff. “There is a very caring and experienced staff here,” he said.
He and his family will be moving from North Wilkesboro, North Carolina where he was previously CEO of Wilkes Regional Medical Center for nine years. The Wilkes Regional Medical Center is a publicly owned facility, and has 130 beds, compared with 75 in Elko. Henson said, “Both for-profit and nonprofit hospitals face the basic issues of developing staffs that attend to patient needs and are “courteous and kind -- high-tech and high-touch.” David also said he prefers to put his best foot forward and “get plugged into the community and learn what the medical staff wants in terms of development,” rather than look to any controversies in the hospital’s past.
Henson is a graduate of the University of Maryland and received his Master’s Degree in healthcare administration from Duke University. David and his wife, Wanda, a real estate broker, have three sons; one who is an Air Force officer and twin boys in high school.
